Top 10 beach destinations for winter sun

I’m always thinking about where/when my next beach holiday will be, especially when it’s cold and miserable outside. So I have done my research to find the top 10 beach destinations around the world for winter sun – whether you’re after short-haul sunshine or a memorable Christmas on the beach.

1. The Canary Islands

Playa_de_Soledad_-_Fuerteventura

Lanzarote, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura are the well-known holiday hot spots that make up the Canary Islands, however there are also 3 smaller islands that are less visited and less spoilt: La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera. The luxury travel market here is currently on the rise, but you can still get a really good price on flights and hotels. It’s summer all year round in the Canaries, where temperatures average in the low-mid 20s throughout.

2. Cape Verde

Cape Verde is a beach destination rapidly growing in popularity thanks to its stunning beaches and surf scene. Still pretty new to the travel circuit, you can find some luxury deals on accommodation and flights are only an extra hour from the Canaries. This African island guarantees sunshine during the European winter with mid-20 temperatures. For glorious beach-centred winter sun, stay on Sal or Boa Vista island.

Glorious Costa Rica is on my bucket list for sure, with its year-round sunshine and picturesque soft beaches. Costa Rica is lapped by both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, so you can explore both waters. With its tropical climate and beautiful beaches, it’s the perfect place for spending Christmas in the winter sun.

Barbados is extremely popular with the British holiday maker all year round, meaning you can definitely find a package deal on luxury hotels and flights. For a short break to chase the winter sun Barbados is a great choice; offering dreamy, palm tree-lined beaches and bright blue ocean, as well as a tropical climate in the high-20s throughout the year.

Thailand’s biggest island of Phuket offers reliable sunshine, striking beaches and amazing snorkelling – and all at a fairly reasonable price. It’s grown from being a backpacker-must to a luxury mainstream favourite, but still remains significantly cheaper to visit compared to the typical British standards. After factoring in the long-haul flights, Phuket provides the opportunity to experience paradise on a budget.

6. St Lucia

St Lucia is arguably one of the most beautiful Caribbean islands thanks to tall green volcanic ‘cones’ (Petit Piton and Gros Piton) rising out of its bright blue ocean. The striking landscape of St Lucia, combined with lush greenery and beautiful beaches, means it’s long been popular with honeymooners worldwide. With year-round hot weather, St Lucia is the perfect winter sun getaway.

Definitely on my bucket list are the Seychelles, found in the Indian ocean, these are the ultimate paradise islands (spending Christmas here would be incredible!). If you’ve got the budget, the private island resorts and villas have got to be some of the most incredible anywhere in the world (Price William and Kate Middleton honeymooned here!). The best months to visit are October and November, when temperatures are high-20s and you just avoid the rainy season.

8. Bali

Heavenly Bali is known for its blissful spa retreats and idyllic beaches, but it also has a highly contemporary and glamorous side, with chic beach clubs and renowned restaurants. Bali is considerably cheaper to visit compared to the typical British standards, meaning you can find some really luxurious beach/jungle resorts at far more reasonable prices than you might think. It’s hot year-round but rainiest during November-April, however this makes it the cheapest time to visit and when it does rain, it’s only in short tropical bursts.

Coastal spots south of Colombo, such as Galle, offer unspoilt beauty and total relaxation. With charming bays, long stretches of golden beach, incredible sunsets and temperatures in the high-20s, Sri Lanka is the perfect pick for a budget-friendly island escape in winter. You can find some really luxurious villas on Airbnb for great prices.

Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula on the Atlantic Coast boasts year-round sunshine and glorious beaches. Swim in its green lagoons, snorkel in its coves and stroll along the picture-postcard Tulum beach. Flights can get pricy as it’s a 10+ hour flight time, however with plenty of luxury hotels to choose from, you can definitely find a deal on accommodation if you shop around.
